Back in 2015, Kanye West sat down with Ryan Seacrest to talk about this (then) brand new partnership with adidas. “I want to apologise to all the kids and all the parents that can’t get the shoes currently because there’s only 9,000,” he explained. “And also, ’cause they’re $350 and if they’re out of anyone’s price range…I just wanna make sure that we keep it safe.” Ye ended the interview by making the bold statement that “eventually, everybody who wants to get Yeezys will get Yeezys.”
For the past decade, Yeezy sneakers have always been seen as something of a status symbol. Their retail prices have always been on the higher end of the scale, and their resale prices are even higher. When the American rapper and fashion designer announced his short-lived collaboration with Gap in 2021, he wanted everything to be affordable. The project obviously didn’t go as planned, and he blamed the collection’s eventual demise on the fact that the clothing company refused to cut down its prices to the level that he wanted them to.
But now that Ye isn’t part of any brand, he’s worked with legendary footwear designer Steven Smith on his first post-adidas trainer, known as the Yeezy Pod. Announced at the end of last year, this minimalist silhouette is painted in an all-black colourway and is crafted from a stretchy knit-like material. Unlike other sock-like sneakers that we’ve seen in the past, the collar reaches way past the wearer’s mid-shin. This has been specifically designed so that the entire shoe can be easily packed away in your bag or the pocket of your jeans.
When the Pod was first introduced, it was priced at a whopping $200. However, during the Super Bowl LVIII this past weekend, West made the surprising announcement that he was officially cutting the price down to just $20, or £17 if you’re here in the UK. While it’s been almost nine years since the Seacrest interview, it looks like he has finally lived up to his promise. What’s more, if you purchased them before the price cut, Yeezy will refund the difference so you won’t lose out on anything.
