Converse began its life in 1908 as the Converse Rubber Shoe Company. Founded by Marquis Mills Converse, it started off as a rubberised shoe manufacturer, making winterised shoes for adults and children. Ten years later, they introduced the first All Star basketball shoe, which proved extremely popular throughout Massachusetts.
However, it wasn’t until 1923, when basketball player Chuck Taylor entered the factory complaining of sore feet, that Converse made him a salesman and ambassador for the brand. Even after all of this time, the name Chuck Taylor is synonymous with Cons – many of which still include his signature to this day even after being bought by Nike 2003.
All Star vs. One Star: The Differences
While the All Star might be the more famous sneaker, that hasn’t stopped the Converse One Star from being one of their more popular models. There are plenty of similarities to speak of – namely with regards to the branding and the name – but there are many notable differences between the two types of shoes.
Design
One of the main differences is the physical design of the shoes. Everyone knows what the Chuck Taylor All Star looks like. In generally, they’re made from canvas, have thick rubber soles, and are laced all the way up the ankles. The Converse One Star, on the other hand, is generally made from a form of suede, are slightly chunkier in design, and sport a more casual, standard design.
Colours
One thing that made the Converse brand so popular was the freedom of expression that they could bring to the wearer. While initially only available in black canvas and leather options, they quickly became more adventurous, with countless colours, patterns, designs, and material types, allowing sneakerheads to wear them their own way. The Converse One Star, though, boasts a more understated palette. This is because they are designed more as an everyday trainer.
Fit
Believe it or not, the All Star and One Star, while extremely similar in aesthetics, fit quite differently. Firstly, All Stars were originally designed as sports shoes, and as such are made of a thinner, more breathable material. This differs from the One Star, which are thicker and more padded, suited for walking longer distances. We would recommend going true to size (TTS) for the All Star, and half a size up for the One Star.
