Meet the New Balance 990v7 Grey: A Familiar Icon Gets Sharper

Rosalía’s sighting in the New Balance 990v7 puts the next chapter of the storied franchise in a familiar setting: on someone’s feet, out in the city. The interest lies in how much New Balance can change its signature grey trainer while keeping it recognisable. Early previews suggest the answer involves sharper layering, a revised sole and a subtle aged finish.

The grey suede remains the visual anchor, but the panels have been rearranged. A larger protective overlay wraps the lower upper, while higher-set panels give the sides a more technical appearance. Joe Freshgoods’ subsequent Instagram preview offers a clearer look at reflective detailing and an “N” logo that recalls the 990v3. Slightly aged tones on the branding and midsole soften the effect, bringing some vintage character to the updated shape.

That balance between continuity and change runs through the model’s history. The original 990 arrived in 1982 in understated grey, with an unusually expensive three-figure price tag. Decades later, the 990v6 pushed the design towards a more flowing, performance-inspired upper and introduced FuelCell cushioning. The v7 appears to build on that direction while making the layers more pronounced.

Both sneaker reports describe softer FuelCell foam, alongside ENCAP cushioning and additional stabilising components, including a new plastic support plate. In everyday terms, the reported aim is more cushioning while retaining structure underfoot. These remain preview details, however, rather than evidence of how the finished shoe fits or feels.

Rosalía’s involvement also needs context. New Balance announced her as a global ambassador in July 2025; her wearing this pair does not establish a Rosalía-designed collaboration. No firm release date, retail price or confirmed stockist list is available for the New Balance 990v7 at this time.
