New Balance Refines the 9060 with the Updated 9060R

The New Balance 9060 has spent the past few years in the spotlight by leaning into exaggerated proportions and layered panelling. The latest 9060R variant heads in the opposite direction. Rather than reinventing the model, it strips back the upper while keeping the chunky ABZORB sole unit intact, creating something that feels much closer to the brand’s classic 99X lineage. At first glance, the changes aren’t immediately obvious, but the longer the two models sit side by side, the more different they become.

Below, we have an on-foot look and detailed review of the New Balance 9060R “Grey Yellow”.

This New Balance 9060R colourway takes a much softer approach than the launch pairs, relying on muted neutrals and subtle contrast rather than bold blocking.

The upper is built around a crisp white open mesh base, giving the trainer a light, breathable appearance. Sitting over the top are light grey suede overlays that wrap from the toe through the midfoot and heel, highlighting the cleaner, more elongated panel layout unique to the 9060R. A cool pale grey synthetic overlay runs beneath the suede across the sidewalls, adding depth without making the design feel busy.

The standout detail is the muted cream-yellow “N” logo, which introduces just enough warmth to break up the otherwise monochrome palette. It’s noticeably smaller than the oversized branding found on the standard 9060, reinforcing the 9060R’s cleaner, more understated identity.

Even though the proportions underneath haven’t changed, the redesign makes the 9060R appear lower, longer and considerably more streamlined than the original model. Importantly, none of those visual updates come at the expense of what made the 9060 popular in the first place.

Sizing wise these fit ever so slightly tighter than the normal 9060, so if New Balance usually fit tight in your size, definitely go half size up!
