We can all admit that facing off against Nike’s Air Jordan 1 could be hard to do. But adidas dared to outclass their rival with the unveiling of the Rivalry. The adidas Y-3 Rivalry “Black” reimagines the vintage basketball shoe for the runway. This colourway offers a luxurious look while hiding in an all-Black makeover.
Adidas and their luxury sub-label brand Y-3 teams up to bring back some iconic lifestyle trainers. This is not a surprise move as both creatives continue to push the borders of fashion to the next level. One of the latest in the footwear collection is the Y-3 Rivalry, rocking a bulky look thanks to the padded midsole.
The adidas Rivalry originally came out in 1986 as a high-top basketball shoe. Initially worn by New York Knicks Superstar Patrick Ewing, adidas eventually renamed the shoe to Rivalry as Ewing rocked his own brand.
Leather makes up the upper construction of the shoe, with three stripes on the sides and the trefoil on the tongue. Just like other popular 80s basketball shoes, the adidas Rivalry became a classic hit in streetwear.
The adidas Y-3 Rivalry modifies the shoe with a bulkier look, pull tabs on both the tongue and heel, and a more streamlined outsole.
This adidas Y-3 Rivalry “Black” colourway features an all-Black makeover that hides most of the trainer’s details. Its chunky design and minimalist labels remain true to form just like Y-3 intended.
This pair releases in January 2023 along with other adidas Y-3 silhouettes. The shoe also comes in its opposite Off-White colourway for contrasting options.
