Sergio Lozano’s famed Air Max 95 was a difficult model to surpass. That’s why his succeeding Air Max 96 went with a more futuristic approach. Even with a tough challenge ahead, Nike and Lozano brought back iconic Air Max features to keep the series consistent.
There were two variations of the Nike Air Max 96. The first version featured a mesh base upper with leather overlays that mimic ocean waves. It continued the mini-Swoosh branding from the 95 and positioned diagonally. Visible Air Max units in the heel and forefoot are back in typical Air Max fashion.
Now, the Nike Air Max 96 2 has been a mystery. Nobody really knows why there were two versions. But the running trainer appeared with a more reinforced upper. Atop the mesh base upper are multiple leather panels that provide even more structure. There’s the leather toe cap, leather mudguard, and an exoskeleton-like panel on the midfoot and the rear. The Swoosh also returned in the midfoot area in a bigger size. Even the eyestays are structured with leather too.
Because of the subtle confusion, the Nike Air Max 96 didn’t receive the same attention that the Air Max 95 and 97 had. But 2021 had a new plan for the silhouette, and it’s returning in the classic “Persian Violet” colourway.
The Nike Air Max 96 2 “Persian Violet” features the namesake colour as the mesh base upper. Black leather overlays adorn the upper, as well as the entire heel panel and midsole. Hints of white grace the outlined Swoosh and the tongue.
Two visible Air Max units in the forefoot and the heel return for reliable all-day cushioning. Underneath is the iconic waffle traction pattern.
Nike celebrates the Air Max BW’s 30th anniversary, that’s why a bunch of Air Max models released sporting the classic Persian Violet pigments.
It’s available now on the Nike website and select retailers worldwide.
