Sergio Lozano’s famed Air Max 95 was a difficult model to surpass. But he’s always up to the challenge to level up his own masterpiece. Which is why the two Air Max 96 models transitioned to a more futuristic approach.

There were two versions of the Nike Air Max 96. The first release featured a mesh base upper with leather overlays that represent ocean waves. It continued the mini-Swoosh branding from the 95 and is located on the rear. Visible Air Max units in the heel and forefoot are back in the usual Air Max setup.

The Nike Air Max 96 II remains a mystery. It was never confirmed why there was a need for two silhouettes. But the running trainer appears with a more reinforced upper. On the mesh body are multiple leather panels that provide more support. There’s the leather toe cap, leather mudguard, and an exoskeleton-like panel on the midfoot and the rear. The large Swoosh returned in the midfoot area. Even the eyestays are covered with leather too.

The new Nike Air Max 96 II “Cool Grey/Anthracite” features light and dark hues of Grey on the upper. Cool Grey graces the mesh, while the darker Wolf Grey tincture emblazoned the leather overlays.

Within the white midsole are two visible Air Max units in the forefoot and the heel return for reliable all-day cushioning. A waffle traction outsole completes the classic Air Max model.
