Nike LDWaffle x sacai x UNDERCOVER "Night Maroon"

A unique blend of colours adorns this triple blockbuster Nike LDWaffle lifestyle sneaker. Nike partnered with two prominent Japanese brands sacai and UNDERCOVER for a completely breathtaking Nike LDWaffle “Night Maroon” colourway.

Nike and sacai teamed up in 2015 and the rest is history. The two brands continued to bring out banger after banger ever since then. One of the most popular Nike x sacai sneaker is the hybrid of two classic Nike runners. Named Nike LDWaffle, the shoe combined the 1978 Nike LDV and the Nike Waffle Racer, two of Nike’s vintage running trainers. The first LDWaffle came out in 2019 and featured signature details that set sacai apart from other sneaker collabs.

Two Swooshes, stacked foam midsoles, double laces, and double tongues. That’s exactly what set Chitose Abe and her crew at sacai apart from the rest. It was a literal hybrid that took design cues from both the Waffle Racer and Nike LDV. For those who don’t know, Chitose Abe worked for Rei Kawakubo’s Comme des Garçons empire. With her experience, sacai eventually gained fame in the Japanese fashion industry, despite only being formed in 1999.

Another Japanese design label is UNDERCOVER and was formed in 1993 by Jun Takahashi. Just like Abe and her design background, Takahashi had his own story to tell as he and A Bathing Ape founder Nigo launched a store called Nowhere in the 90s. UNDERCOVER is known for the American-style fashion that the brand adopted.

Nike and UNDERCOVER first teamed up in 2010 when they created a new label called Gyakusou. It focused on function apart from the design. The two continued to team up for more sneaker and apparel collections under Gyakusou and UNDERCOVER.

Now for 2021, the two prominent Japanese fashion brands join Nike for this upcoming Nike LDWaffle “Night Maroon”.

This Nike LDWaffle features a Maroon breathable mesh as the base upper. While the black leather panels reinforce the grey suede overlays on the toe, heel, and eyestay. The dual details return in the usual fashion. There are two leather Swooshes on the sides, two laces, two tongues, and a double-stacked sole. The laces and the Swoosh appear in White and Royal Blue to go along with the collar lining.

Nike, sacai, and UNDERCOVER labels appear on the heel panel.
