Nike LDWaffle x sacai x UNDERCOVER "Midnight Spruce / University Red"

Layers upon layers, stacks upon stacks. Double and overlapping designs don this Nike LDWaffle “Midnight Spruce” in collaboration with two Japanese fashion powerhouses sacai and Undercover. The hybrid LDWaffle returns in this triple blockbuster team up for 2021.

Nike and sacai began their connection in 2015 and grew to an even bigger partnership that brought out exclusive sneakers. One of those exclusive sneakers is a hybrid of two classic Nike runners. Called Nike LDWaffle, the shoe combined the 1978 Nike LDV and the Nike Waffle Racer. The first LDWaffle came out in 2019 and featured signature details that defined sacai in the next few collabs with Nike.

Double Swooshes, double midsoles, double laces, and double tongues. Yep, that’s exactly what Chitose Abe and her crew at sacai had in mind for the LDWaffle. It is not surprising at all, knowing that she worked for Rei Kawakubo’s Comme des Garçons empire. With her experience, sacai quickly gained traction in the Japanese fashion industry, despite only being formed in 1999.

UNDERCOVER is another Japanese design imprint that was formed in 1993 by Jun Takahashi. Just like Abe and her design background, Takahashi teamed up with A Bathing Ape founder Nigo and launched a store called Nowhere. UNDERCOVER soon continued to become popular due to its American-style fashion.

Nike and UNDERCOVER first collaborated in 2010 as they created a new label called Gyakusou. It featured functional materials and designs mixed with fashion. Because of the well-respected launch, the two continued to team up for more sneaker and apparel collections.

Fast forward to 2021, two prominent Japanese brands join Nike for this upcoming Nike LDWaffle trainer.

The Nike LDWaffle features a Midnight Spruce breathable mesh as the base upper. While the black leather panels reinforce the grey suede overlays on the toe, heel, and eyestay. The double designs return in the usual fashion. There are two leather Swooshes on the sides, two laces, two tongues, and a double-stacked sole. The laces and the Swoosh appear in White and University Red to go along with the collar lining.
