A modern take on a Nike classic, revisited in 2021. This Nike Waffle Trainer 2 “Gym Red/Metallic Gold” boasts unique pigments and different upper materials to keep the trend going. The lightweight upper and soft foam midsole boost the comfort of this trainer to greater heights!

During Nike’s early years, crafting the best running trainer seemed to be a challenging task for brands. Luckily, Nike co-founders Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman were track and field competitors themselves; with Phil Knight representing the University of Oregon and Bowerman as the head coach. Bill Bowerman experimented with his wife’s waffle maker and substituted rubber. This led to the creation of the waffle sole, a durable and grippy traction pattern that went on to revolutionise running sneakers.

And thus the Nike Waffle Trainer came in 1974, a low-cut running shoe boasting lightweight mesh and suede reinforcements. The soft foam midsole worked well with the waffle sole so athletes can deliver the best performance possible.

The classic Nike running shoe of the 70s returns as a lifestyle option for the modern era of sneakers.

The Nike Waffle Trainer 2 K2 “Gym Red / Metallic Gold” pays tribute to the first American team to ever summit K2, the second-highest mountain on the planet. Mountaineers Jim Wickwire, John Roskelley, Rick Ridgeway, Jim Whittaker, and Lou Reichardt achieved that feat in September 1978, as seen on the sneaker’s sockliner.

If you’re still confused with the connection, Ridgeway and Roskelley were seen wearing the Nike LDV as they ascended on treacherous slopes. This discovery led to Nike launching the Hiking label, which then became Nike ACG.

Gym Red makes up most of the mesh and suede upper combo. While a golden Swoosh and heel tab add to the luxurious details. The “NIKE” label on the heel is overlapped with a K2 to complete the homage. A mountain symbol underneath the Nike logo on the plush tongue can also be seen.

Finishing it off is the foam midsole and waffle traction combo that people loved.

Expected for a November 2021 release, stay tuned on the Nike website for more details.
