You’d think that vintage Nike trainers are only suitable for track and field. But the Nike LDV is a certified mountain-climber! Four American mountaineers embarked on a mission to climb at the summit of K2, the world’s second-tallest mountain. Two of them wore a pair of the OG Nike LDV in the Yellow and Blue colour combination, and this Nike Waffle Trainer II K2 “Yellow Strike” is a tribute to that legendary feat.

The Nike Waffle Trainer‘s origin dates back to the 70s when Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman experimented with his wife’s waffle maker machine. He used rubber to get the mold of the waffle maker and incorporated the sole on prototype models. With a few tweaks and modifications, the waffle sole became a popular feature in Nike’s running trainers.

With its sleek style and all-day comfort, the Nike Waffle silhouettes transitioned to Nike’s lifestyle back catalogue.

The Nike Waffle Trainer 2 is the revamped and upgraded version of the OG Waffle Trainer. It features a more streamlined mesh upper, an exposed foam tongue, a full-length foam midsole, and a waffle sole. It’s one of the popular silhouettes that continue to release in modern colour schemes.

This Nike Waffle Trainer II K2 “Yellow Strike” colourway pays tribute to the first team of Americans who successfully climbed to the top of K2. Two of the climbers in the crew Jim Wickwire and John Roskelley wore the Yellow/Royal Nike ADV. Because of this, Nike paid tribute to “the climb” with a similar colourway.

Yellow makes up most of the mesh and suede upper. While Royal Blue accents adorn the Swoosh and the heel. A “K2” label overlaps the “NIKE” tag on the heel panel. A mountain symbol on the tongue adds to the tribute.

The special sockliner highlights the details of the K2 crew. Finishing the design is the foam midsole and the rubber waffle sole underneath.

Scheduled for a November 2021 launch, check the Nike website for more updates.
