Sean Wotherspoon Gives the Mizuno Wave MG4 LS a Denim Twist

Sean Wotherspoon’s first Mizuno collaboration starts with a rather unknown silhouette: the Wave MG4 LS. The mid-2000s running shoe gave the renowned designer plenty to work with, and the result feels closer to a carefully layered vintage find than a routine colour change.

The Sean Wotherspoon Mizuno Wave MG4 ‘Light Blue’, scheduled for a global release, puts denim at the centre of the upper. Striped fabric runs across the toe and Mizuno’s side logo, while mesh and synthetic panels break up the heavier texture. Off-white sections keep the blue from becoming overwhelming; small red accents give the shoe a sharper finish. The checked SWJP detailing and custom insoles add another vintage reference without taking over the design.

That mix makes sense for Wotherspoon. His 2018 Nike Air Max 1/97 became closely associated with its multicoloured corduroy, and he has continued to explore unexpected fabrics in sneaker collaborations. Here, denim gives Mizuno’s curved running lines a more casual character. The substantial sole and layered upper still read as a retro runner, but the cloth surfaces soften its technical look. Mizuno based the Wave MG4 LS on its 2006 Wave Mustang 4, so the archival shape was already there before Wotherspoon added his own materials.

There is a second, darker version, but it is exclusive to Japan. The colourway has a ‘Light Grey/Off White/Black’ colour blocking with a plaid pattern on the insoles. If you’re looking to cop the Sean Wotherspoon Mizuno Wave MG4, it’s expected to drop on 30 October 2026 for £130.
