The New Balance 1906 has been on an unbelievable run over the past few years. There’ve been plenty of 1906A colourways like the stealthy “Black” and the iconic “Slate Grey”, but if there’s one that sums up the silhouette, it’s the “Deep Blue”. Mixing navy mesh with shiny overlays, it immediately stands out without feeling over the top. But the colour isn’t the only thing grabbing attention. It also puts the 1906A’s biggest talking point front and centre: its layered, deconstructed upper.

Every floating panel, exposed edge, and offset overlay catches the light differently, giving the sneaker far more depth than your standard runner. It still looks unmistakably like a 1906, but there’s something a little more fashion-forward about it.

The Rise of the 1906

Despite its futuristic vibe, the OG 1906 first launched back in 2009 as one of New Balance’s premium running shoes. Named after the year the Boston brand was founded (making it even more special), it packed plenty of performance tech but never quite found the mainstream success it enjoys today.

Then things changed in 2022 when New Balance reintroduced it as the 1906R. Timing couldn’t have been better. Mesh runners were back in a big way, people were moving away from overly chunky, overly complicated dad shoes, and the 1906R landed at exactly the right moment.

Since then, NB has built an entire family around it. There’s the clean and versatile 1906R, the trail-inspired 1906U, and the loafer-inspired 1906L (among many others), and now the 1906A. Each one starts with the same foundation, but each takes the silhouette in a completely different direction. Rather than reinventing the wheel every single time, New Balance has shown just how much mileage there is in one really good idea.

Deconstructed by Design

The 1906A didn’t appear out of thin air. Over the past decade, some of fashion’s biggest names have been rethinking what a finished sneaker should actually look like. Labels like Comme des Garçons and Maison Margiela made raw edges, exposed stitching, and visible construction part of the design itself, proving that shoes didn’t have to look factory fresh to feel premium.

The trend soon filtered into the wider sneaker world. New Balance’s own 2002R “Protection Pack” became one of the brand’s biggest modern success stories by replacing clean suede overlays with jagged, pre-aged panels that looked as though they’d naturally worn away over time. That’s exactly where the 1906A fits in. Rather than making the shoe look distressed, New Balance has focused on exposing its construction. Extended overlays, offset panels, and visible layers give the silhouette a more technical, almost inside-out feel, while keeping everything that made the 1906R such a hit in the first place.

Built Different

At first glance, the 1906A almost looks like someone took a pair of 1906Rs apart and rebuilt them. That’s pretty much the idea.

Instead of tidy overlays sitting neatly across the mesh, the 1906A uses extended synthetic panels, exposed edges, and layered detailing that deliberately looks unfinished. Some pieces stretch beyond where you’d expect them to end, while others reveal more of the mesh underneath.

The result is a sneaker that feels far more sculptural than the standard 1906R. Every angle reveals something new, and the layered construction gives it a sense of movement even when it’s sitting on a shelf. It’s deconstructed without feeling complicated, and bold without becoming difficult to wear.

Under the Hood

For all the visual changes, the ride underneath is exactly what you’d expect from a 1906. The 1906A still packs ACTEVA LITE cushioning, N-ergy shock absorption, ABZORB SBS heel cushioning, and New Balance’s legendary Stability Web support through the midfoot.

In other words, it feels every bit as comfortable as the 1906R. That’s arguably the smartest thing about the design. Rather than reinventing one of its best-performing lifestyle sneakers, New Balance has simply wrapped the same tried-and-tested platform in a fresh new upper.

One of NB’s Best Yet

The best sneaker updates don’t always start from scratch. Sometimes all they need is a different perspective, and that’s exactly what New Balance has done with the 1906A.

Underneath, it’s still the same comfortable runner that’s made the 1906 one of the brand’s biggest success stories. Up top, though, it’s a completely different proposition. Layered, deconstructed and packed with small details that reveal themselves the longer you look.

If the 1906R is the everyday classic, the 1906A is its more expressive sibling. And in colourways like the “Deep Blue”, it might just be the strongest version of the silhouette yet.
