Back in 2004, Nike announced that it was teaming up with the OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital for a collaboration that would leave a lasting impression on both the lives of young patients and the sneaker world as a whole. At the time, no one really knew if this was just going to be a one-off project, but, almost two decades later, it’s still going stronger than ever as we take our first look at the Nike Doernbecher Freestyle 2023 collection.
Showcasing a wide range of unique aesthetics that reflect the resilience and personalities of these young creators, for this year’s collection, the kids have told their own personal stories through their own trainer designs.
Hugo Covarrubias Molina brings his vision to the Air Jordan 3, inspired by the Seattle Seahawks uniforms. This design features Hugo’s nickname “Juice” prominently displayed, symbolising his individuality. Elephant print detailing features across the front and back, and underfoot, the outsoles bear the empowering message: “It’s okay to be different.”
Hailey Leyva, an 8-year-old heart warrior, lends her personal touch to the Air Max 1. Her design, representing her unique heart journey, includes special logos on the tongue and sockliner. Hailey’s love for ice cream, rainbows, and jewellery is showcased throughout, with a charm bracelet adding a whimsical touch.
Macey Bodily’s Dunk High is a tribute to her battle with brain cancer, adorned with a lush floral print and a grey ribbon on the heel. Macey’s personal touch extends to the tongue label, which features a recipe for her chocolate chip cookies, sharing a piece of her world with every wearer. The rubber midsole is also printed with the inspiring phrase: “She believed she could so she did.”
Garrett Amerson’s take on the ACG Mountain Fly Low 2 is an homage to the Pacific Northwest’s natural beauty. The shoe showcases a green tree line with white clouds, brown mud-like textures, and a waterfall on the tongue. A yellow embroidered sun and a butterfly motif pay tribute to his twin brother, adding layers of meaning to this rugged, outdoor-ready design.
Christopher Musquiz Jr.’s love for Japanese culture and anime shines through in his design of the Go Flyease. The sneaker features images of his favourite animal on the insoles and a special Mount Fuji-like logo on the tongue, blending his personal interests with a sleek, modern aesthetic.
This special rendition of the Cortez is graced with Sydney Little’s own hand-drawn artwork, capturing her spirited connection to swimming. The heel of the sneaker is adorned with resin accents, which cleverly represents water droplets. Adding an imaginative twist, glow-in-the-dark elements are incorporated into the design, inspired by mesmerising ripples of water.
The Nike Doernbecher Freestyle 2023 collection not only showcases the artistic talents and personal journeys of these young designers, but it also contributes significantly to the OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, with over $33 million raised since the initiative’s inception.
