It’s no secret that the Nike Zoom Vomero 5 is currently one of the hottest sneakers on the planet. First released back in 2011, it was originally designed to be the ultimate running shoe, catering to everyone from casual joggers all the way to hardcore marathoners. However, while we’re not entirely sure what happened along the way, the Y2K silhouette eventually became one of the most hyped Nike trainers out there. People were literally paying five times the retail price just to get their hands (and feet) on a pair.
Over a decade later, and it’s still as popular as ever. However, even if you’re the biggest ZM5 collector out there, there’s still stuff about it that you probably have no idea of. So, in this article, we’ll be going through five things about the Nike Zoom Vomero 5 that you probably didn’t know. Let’s get to it!
At the end of 2018, Drake was primed and ready to move from Team Nike to Team adidas. The Canadian rapper was even spotted religiously wearing the German sportswear company’s signature Three Stripe tracksuit. However, after some internal disagreements, the partnership was prematurely shelved. The 6 God confirmed this in Travis Scott’s ‘Sicko Mode’ track, and he hammered the final nail in the coffin when he wore a custom pair of Zoom Vomero 5s during his ‘Assassination Vacation Tour’ in the summer of 2019. This was one of the main reasons why the model became so madly hyped that year.
Around the same time that the Champagne Papi was flexing his ZM5s on-stage, Samuel Ross announced the shoe’s first collaboration ever: the A-COLD-WALL* x Nike Zoom Vomero 5. Featuring a classic mesh and leather construction, the British streetwear label flipped the script by adding a huge ACW-branded block around the heel, giving it a high fashion-esque makeover. While most sneakerheads only know of the “Black” and “Sail” colourways, Ross actually dropped two more as well, including the “Redox” and the “Solarised.” These were both extremely rare, and you hardly ever seem them nowadays.
We mentioned before that the Zoom Vomero 5 originally released in 2011, but surprisingly, it was actually cancelled very soon after. So when the trainer launched again around 2018, everyone thought that it was back for good. However, for some reason during the height of its popularity, Nike decided to put an end to the line once again. We’re not entirely sure why the Beaverton-based brand decided to do this, but we’re glad that they finally came to their senses (again) with the 2023 restock. We’re sensing a trend happening here, and we’re hoping that history doesn’t repeat itself anytime soon.
Remember when Nike+ was a pretty big deal? Essentially, it was an app that could keep track of all your runs, add up your mileage, and pit them against your mates. While it doesn’t sound that groundbreaking right now, back in 2017, it was huge deal. In fact, the Swoosh even released the FuelBand (a first generation activity tracker that was way ahead of its time) and Nike+iPod, which linked to your iPod to record all of your movement. When the Zoom Vomero 5 first debuted, it was engineered to work seamlessly with this tech, which was unlike anything else out there at the time. In fact, the model was originally named the Zoom Vomero+ 5.
Everyone always talks about Zoom Vomero 5, but did you know that there are even more Vomeros out there? The Zoom Vomero 6 was introduced one year later in 2012, and at the end of last year, Nike took the wraps off of the Zoom Vomero 17. But at the end of the day, the fifth generation pair will always be the one that we talk about the most, and even though it’s been around for over 13 years now, it’s still considered to be the best of the bunch. Don’t believe us? Just take a look at legendary colourways like the “Gundam” and the “Supersonic.”
