At the end of 2022, Skepta made the surprise announcement that he was leaving Team Nike and joining Team PUMA instead. Considering his Swoosh trainers are some of the best in the business (his Air Max 97 is a pure classic), this sent shockwaves through the sneakerverse. However, while we’ve all still been trying to recover from the news, the British grime icon has been in the lab working on his next shoe, and we’re now getting our first look at the Skepta x PUMA Forever “Black.”
While Big Smoke has worn PUMA silhouettes like the Velophasis in the past, the Forever marks his first all-original model. Two years in the making, it boasts a chunky design that perfectly balances the classic with the contemporary. Working on top of a ballistic mesh base, it’s overlaid by synthetic panels throughout. The German sportswear company’s legendary Formstrip is stitched across the lateral and medial sidewalls, and a new co-branded eagle logo graces the tongue, representing the birth of a new and fruitful collaboration.
Underfoot, the highly-sculpted midsole is also dipped in an all-black colour scheme, and it’s accented with shiny chrome on the shank and heel. This is very similar to what the Boy Better Know rapper did with his Air Max Tailwind 5 from 2021.
But while Skepta could’ve just left it there, he went one step further by covering the Forever with an iridescent finish. Potentially a nod to the thermographic cover art from his 2019 album Ignorance is Bliss, it means you’ll be able to flex your kicks even in low light conditions. All of this then comes in a special edition shoebox, and it’s packed with extra laces in orange and yellow.
Set to drop on May 18th, the Skepta x PUMA Forever “Black” might just change the sneaker game for good.
