2022 marks the 35th anniversary of the Nike Air Max 1 and to say we’ve been spoilt with fire releases this year would be an understatement. As 2022 nears a close, Nike isn’t done just yet! Nike’s back for more special-edition Air Max 1s, this time with design input from SNKRS users from Japan. The upcoming Nike Air Max 1 “Design by Japan” boasts vintage hits inspired by a 1978 running shoe.
Lead designer Eric Goto shared preview photos of the Design by Japan edition, with hints that we can expect a 2023 release that will hopefully hit Europe. Let’s check out the rest of the images of the sample below.
The Nike Air Max 1 “Design by Japan” took the colour scheme from the 1978 Nike Sting. Light Olive hues comprise the leather upper overlays and cover the White mesh base. Grey suede overlays appear on the forefoot. Orange accents make up the leather heel panel.
The laces come in Cream White, while the tongue rocks a vintage Nike label. Blue Green pigments appear on the top plastic lace loop. A golden AM1 hangtag joins the special packaging.
The yellowish PU midsole brings vintage vibes all over the shoe. Underneath, the Gum rubber outsole provides grippy and durable traction. More old-school Nike labels comprise the heel.
The Design by Japan is a showcase of design ideas formulated by SNKRS app users from Japan. We’re hoping Nike also launches more colourways inspired by input from SNKRS users from all over the world!
Reportedly dropping in 2023, this shoe will likely headline the 2023 Air Max Day.
In other news, the Air Max 1 ’86 Big Bubble featuring a large heel air bubble will also arrive in 2023!
