Yes, it seems even the vintage Nike Cortez trainer is getting the sacai treatment. This isn’t just another random drop, though! 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the 1972 performance running trainer turned Nike icon! While the Air Max 1 and Air Force 1 continue making headlines, the Cortez is also in for a big surprise this year.
A minimalist runner like the Nike Cortez seemed hard to rework or update; also considering the fact that it was one of the more modern trainers during its time. Japanese luxury fashion brand sacai managed to bring the label’s signature details for the shoe’s 50th-anniversary milestone.
Let’s take a look at these early photos courtesy of @solebyjc and an on-foot preview from the brand’s FW22 collection.
The first previewed colourway is the White / Blue / Red or more popularly known as the “Forrest Gump”. In typical sacai fashion, overlapping layers, double details, and stacked midsoles highlight the shoe.
Nylon still makes up the base, while fuzzy suede in Grey covers the eyestays as well as the toe. The collar and the lining feature another collar inside the shoe; seemingly connected to the second tongue.
The Red Swoosh goes beside another Grey Swoosh on the sides if you need more brand labels.
The double-wedged heel returns, while raised sidewalls replace the usual dual-density sponge midsole on the original. The biggest addition is the exposed Zoom Air unit on the forefoot. It’s still unknown whether there are two Zoom Air pods beside one another or not.
Herringbone still remains as the iconic traction pattern that we all love.
Another colourway appears to be in a greyscale base with hints of White and a vintage Sail White midsole.
While there is no official release information on both Nike Cortez sacai pairs, check out another upcoming Nike Cortez collab this 2022! Previously we covered the Nike Cortez x Union LA which you can read here.
