If you’re not too familiar with King’s Day (or Koningsdag), that’s probably because it’s a national holiday that’s celebrated only in the Netherlands. This year, Nike is going all-out with the festivities with the appropriately named Nike Air Max 1 “King’s Day,” and even if you don’t honor this tradition, there’s no question that this is still pretty cool colourway.
Every year on King’s Day, its citizens take part in what is called oranjegekte (or orange madness). Basically, absolutely everyone where’s the country’s national colour from head to toe. For this Air Max 1, the Beaverton-based brand has paid homage to this convention. From the ballistic mesh base to the suede overlays across the midfoot and heel, these are all painted in a vibrant “Bright Mandarin” hue. Even the cotton laces and Swoosh are dipped in this bright colour to really drive the theme home.
To making things even more intriguing, “Amber Brown” leather features along the sidewalls and mudguard. The back of sneaker is detailed with a wood grain-like effect, and all of this sits on top of a chocolatey “Cacao Wow” Air midsole. It’s then finalised with a complementary outsole, which rounds off the “King’s Day.”
The Nike Air Max 1 “King’s Day” captures the essence of King’s Day in the Netherlands through its choice of vibrant colours and premium materials. The day is pencilled in for April 27th, so expect it to drop around then.
