The New Balance 1890 might be one of the brand’s newest silhouettes, but it has already had a loud start. The early colourways went heavy on contrast, from the black and green OG pair to the Joe Freshgoods release and the Action Bronson colourways. There is even a Stone Island version on the way, which tells you how much New Balance is backing the silhouette.
But for us, the 1890 works best when it calms down.
The New Balance 1890 “Grey Days” strips away the louder colour blocking and lets the shape do the talking. No heavy contrast. No chaotic panel work fighting for attention. Just New Balance grey, cream accents, breathable mesh and enough silver around the lace loops to give the shoe a proper tech-runner edge.

This colourway feels completely at home in the Grey Days line-up. The grey upper shows off the layered construction without making the shoe look too busy, while the sail midsole, matching sail laces and pale “N” logo soften the whole thing nicely. It still looks technical, but it does not scream for attention in the same way some of the earlier pairs did.

That is what makes it stand out. Previous 1890 releases had an almost Air Max Plus TN-type energy, with louder colours doing a lot of the work. This pair leans the other way. It proves the silhouette does not need bold colour to look interesting. The shape, panel layout and segmented sole unit already give it enough presence.
On foot, the 1890 also makes a strong case for itself. It feels light, breathable and roomy through the forefoot, with enough space for the toes to flex naturally. There is an airy feel here that brings the Nike Zoom Vomero 5 to mind, especially in how open and wearable it feels for day-to-day use. It is not stiff, dense or overly built up.

That also separates it from the ABZORB 2010. The 2010 has a heavier, more structured feel on foot, while the 1890 feels more refreshing and easy to wear for longer periods. It still has that chunky New Balance tech-runner shape, but it does not feel weighed down by it.
For us, this might be the best ABZORB colourway so far. That does come down to taste. Louder pairs have their place, and New Balance clearly knows how to make the 1890 pop. But this model looks strongest in neutral colours. Grey Days gives it the breathing room it needed.

The New Balance 1890 “Grey Days” arrives on 22nd May alongside the rest of the Grey Days 2026 collection via New Balance and select retailers.
