New Balance pulls one of its boldest late-’90s runners out of the archives with the return of the 1000 in the new “Arid Stone” colourway. First launched in 1999, this silhouette marked a shift in design, with its sharp lines, futuristic overlays, and sculpted profile. Now back in the spotlight, it stays faithful to that original blueprint while benefiting from a refreshed execution.
The upper flips the usual structure, using layered mesh underlays that peek through synthetic panels, giving it a dimensional, almost skeletal frame. Embroidered detailing adds subtle texture, while reflective hits across the upper bring visibility in low-light. A rubberised āNā logo, outlined in clear plastic, reinforces the tech-laced identity of the design. Even the lacing structure gets a tweak, featuring an external cage with nylon-reinforced eyelets.
Underfoot, the segmented midsole includes both polyurethane and ABZORB cushioning, placed in the heel and forefoot. These units soften impact while still keeping the shoe grounded and firm enough for everyday wear. The Stability Web sits at the midfoot, offering arch support without extra bulk. Combined, this setup mirrors the performance-first thinking of the late ā90s while holding up to current expectations.
