The Nike Air Rift originally debuted in 1996 as a running shoe inspired by barefoot runners from Kenya. This silhouette also takes its name from the Great Rift Valley, a land formation connecting Asia and Africa that runs from Lebanon to Mozambique. The shoe was extremely popular in Japan as a sneaker sandal, thanks to its split-toe design. Its neoprene construction and laceless setup proved to be a viable option for easy-entry shoes.
