One of New Balance‘s most storied silhouettes is making a comeback – the New Balance 1300JP “Steel Blue.” Re-releasing as part of the Boston sportswear company’s “Grey Days” line, this iconic trainer carries with it a legacy that stretches from America’s running tracks to the backstreets of Japan.

First introduced in 1985, the 1300JP was billed as New Balance’s top-tier running shoe. At $130, it was expensive for its time, but the performance, craftsmanship, and comfort won over purists. Then something unexpected happened. It took on a life of its own in Japan. In Ueno, where rare U.S. imports held cult status, the modek became a grail. That demand led to an exclusive Japan reissue in 1995. Since then, it’s followed a near-mythical release cycle – only dropping once every five years.

This 2025 edition sticks to the OG formula. Premium suede overlays and breathable mesh panels return in the original “Steel Blue” colourway. ENCAP cushioning anchors the midsole for comfort that still holds up decades later. The “Made in USA” stamp seals its status.

The New Balance 1300JP “Steel Blue” will restock within the coming weeks, and once it’s gone, it’s gone – well, at least until 2030 anyway. Let us know if you’ll be going for these, and be sure to keep it locked at Captain Creps for your best chance to secure your size!
