The New Balance 204V Is the Mary Jane Sneaker That Changes Everything

Puma reimagined the Speedcat with a ballet-inspired silhouette. adidas gave the Samba the Mary Jane treatment. Luxury fashion have embraced strap-fastened flats, while Instagram and Tiktok have propelled the look firmly into the mainstream.

Now, New Balance has entered the chat.

With the launch of the 204V, the Boston brand has delivered its own interpretation of the sporty Mary Jane, one that feels less like a subtle evolution. Rather than simply replacing laces with a strap, New Balance has reworked one of its newest silhouettes into a shoe that feels brand new.

The result is arguably the most convincing sporty Mary Jane yet.

Building on the Success of the 204L

The 204V wouldn’t exist without the success of the 204L.

Released as New Balance’s answer to the growing demand for low-profile “cute” trainers, the 204L combined the sleek proportions of 1970s running shoes with the layered construction and premium materials that have become synonymous with the brand.

The 204V takes that foundation and pushes it further.

The most obvious change is the complete removal of the traditional lace system. In its place is a laceless slip-on construction, secured by a single adjustable strap that transforms the silhouette into New Balance’s interpretation of the Mary Jane. The cleaner upper gives the shoe a more streamlined appearance while making it easier to slip on and off, without sacrificing a decent fit we all expect from NB.

The launch colourways underline that New Balance sees the 204V as more than a subtle update. The brand is introducing striking electric blue (pictured) and vivid red editions that immediately draw attention, reinforcing the idea that the 204V is intended to stand out rather than quietly blend in.

It’s a noticeable departure from the muted greys, earthy tones and heritage-inspired palettes that defined much of the 204L’s early appeal and a big step away from chunky runners.

Introduced during Paris Fashion Week, the 204V makes a case that the future may belong to something altogether more refined.
