Over the years, Nike has gone all-out with its Chinese New Year-inspired sneakers. And while we’ve seen some absolute bangers along the way, none of them live up to the freshly-revealed Nike Air Force 1 “Chinese New Year.” The perfect way to celebrate the Year of the Dragon, this is what you get if you combine trainers with art.
While most Air Force 1s are made from leather and sometimes suede if you’re lucky, this CNY-themed colourway drops all of these materials in favour of a creamy silk. This satiny fabric wraps around the entire upper, and it’s decorated with an ornate pattern that nods to traditional Chinese culture. Across the sidewalls, you’ll find a dragon and a phoenix embroidered in gold, and you’ll also find shiny beads throughout to make this shoe even more eye-catching.
Metallic accents can be found on the tongue tag, lace dubrae, and aglets, and all of these are also laser-etched with the character for “harmony.” Underfoot, the AF1 sits on top of a complementary Air midsole, and all of this comes packed in a special shoebox that’s painted in red as a symbol of luck.
If you want the Nike Air Force 1 “Chinese New Year” in your collection this season, then you need to listen up. Scheduled to release on February 14th, these will be available via Nike and the SNKRS app. That said, they’ll only drop in China, and they will cost you around £300. So if you want a pair, you better hit up your plug right now.
