The biggest question many people will have in mind when going to buy a new pair of Nike shoes is how long they will actually last once you buy them.
After all, you don’t want to drop your hard-earned money on a brand-new pair only for them to break down and start feeling uncomfortable after a few days or weeks.
Out of all the shoe brands, Nike tends to have one of the better reputations when it comes to their shoe quality, however with that being said, there are a few areas where they can falter in their designs which can affect how long the shoes will actually last. Recent QC has come up as an issue in the community.
Here is everything you need to know about the longevity of Nike shoes, including which of their products have been known to last the longest.
Nike has been making shoes since the 1970s, making them one of the more experienced brands when it comes to shoemaking, however, unlike many of their competitors who started off with casual footwear, Nike came right out of the gate creating shoes that were made specifically for running and sportswear.
In fact, one of their first shoes ever made, the Waffle Racer, was released in 1972 and was handed out to athletes competing in U.S Olympic trials.
Nike would continue to design their shoes with sports in mind, eventually taking over the basketball scene too by the 1980s.
By this point, they had also introduced the iconic Air cushioning in the outsole of their shoes, a feature that helped Nike dominate the sports market even to this day.
What this means is that Nike has been refining their shoes for decades. While they have branched out to also creating casual shoes, these all came from a sports blueprint, one that is specifically designed to withstand lots of damage and prolonged use.
This is why today, after years of refining their materials and adding in new technology such as the improved Air technology to alleviate the weight of the person wearing them, Nike shoes have become some of the most durable on the market.
If you wear any pair of Nike shoes fairly regularly and don’t wear them in harsh conditions or terrain too often, they will remain wearable and as comfortable as when you first got them for between 1-3 years on average.
Of course, there are a lot of factors that can affect this, however because of the care taken to craft the shoe and the premium materials, it does mean that they will still last you a few years if taken care of.
It should also be noted that shoes designed for running and sports tend to have better protection and materials which means they will, on average, last a little longer.
Certain models like the Nike Air Max 720, Nike VaporMax and The Nike Air Max 270 have all been criticised for burst bubbles or squeaking. If you’re looking for longevity you may want to skip all three of these models.
There are a few Nike shoes that many fans agree tend to last a lot longer than many of the others, primarily due to how they are designed and for what purpose.
Here are some of their shoes that you can expect to have a long lifespan.
After years of careful runner-informed data, Nike has created one of the most durable running shoes on the market, and while the breathable flyknit, higher foam, and plush padding are a reason for this, the primary addition that allows them to have such a long lifespan is the Waffle outsole.
All of this means that the shoe remains soft and comfortable while also alleviating a lot of the weight and tension each time you step down, being able to loyally serve you for years even after running with them in the harshest conditions.
These running shoes may look fairly standard on the outside, however they actually have many unique features as part of their design to make them one of the most comfortable and tight-fitted running shoes Nike has ever put out.
With the Flywire cables keeping the laces tight at all times, along with foam around the heel and ankles and the translucent mesh keeping the shoe tight at all times, this shoe won’t slam on the ground and get damaged when you move around in it since it fits so well, making it incredibly durable.
There are many people who will swear that the Pegasus is the comfiest, and most durable shoe they have ever worn, and considering it uses Flywire and Nike React technology which keeps it lightweight while also fitting the shoe with a tremendous amount of foam to make for soft landings, they certainly aren’t lying.
The grooves and Waffle-inspired outsole also help to make the shoe incredibly sturdy. It also uses engineered mesh which is flexible and a lot stronger than regular mesh.
When it comes to casual shoes, there aren’t many that are as sturdy and well-protected as the classic 80s-inspired Nike Dunk High Retro which is designed with crisp leather fitted with durable overlays, a foam midsole, and a padded high-collar, making this a bright and stylish shoe, but also one that can last you several years because of just how much padding and protective layers it uses.
The Nike Zoom Structure 24 is a mix between being a casual and a running shoe, making it incredibly versatile and perfect to use for any occasion, and the reason it is able to withstand so much use is thanks to its durable rubber sole, the crash pad at the heel, and the thick foam midsole.
All of this creates a snug-fitting shoe that can take an extreme amount of damage and still hold up a lot better than most other shoes that Nike has to offer.
While each one of Nike’s shoes is made using premium materials, meaning they will all last a lot longer than some other brands, there are a few downsides which can mean some of their shoes can end up breaking a little too early.
One big issue is that the EVA midsoles which are used in many Air Max shoes can begin cracking after constant usage, and this is especially bad for Air Max shoes because this can lead to damage to the Air bubbles, which for many people are the worst part of these shoes since they can fog, pop, and crack simply by wearing the shoes frequently for a prolonged period.
Some older Nike shoes also have weaker midsoles and outsoles which can separate much easier than many of their newer shoes which are stitched together much more precisely.
Additionally, the glue and paint used on older models can dry up over time, and while you can slow this down by storing them correctly, it is still a common issue which can have a big impact on their appearance.
While all Nike shoes are designed to last you at least a few years as long as you care for them properly, it’s primarily their running shoes that use the best materials and technology to extend their lifespan as much as possible. If longevity is key, you’re best consulting their running range.
